Much to say...

It is strange to be picking my journaling back up after such a long absence.  I suppose the best thing is to start at the most recent happenings and work my way back.  Three significant changes happened over the summer.  Joseph's sister Anna and her family moved into the area.  We are so happy to have them to share our CA experience with!  Anna has two teenage girls, one boy (David's age), two younger girls (Ruth's age), and a baby.  Despite all the changes in her life with her recent move, Anna has been so considerate of our family.  She has already hosted us for dinner twice and arranged a temple night for our family.  Needless to say, when our families are together, everyone is in cousin heaven.  Emmy has especially taken a liking to baby Greta and Maggie.

Last fall, I began to feel a sharp pain in my knee whenever I danced or ran around with the kids.   It turns out that my physical activity had yielded a tear in my Meniscus.  After the prescribed 4 months of physical therapy, the pain seemed to be only getting worse, so I made the drastic decision to have an arthroscopic meniscectomy (surgery).  Since I knew that I needed to recover quickly from surgery, I opted out of general anesthesia and did a less heavy sedative.  I think the surgeon was surprised that I was still awake as I was wheeled to the surgery room.  The surgical bed has a strong resemblance to Frankenstein's bed, especially with the weird arm rests that my arms were strapped to.  Glad I finally fell asleep at that point!  Anyway, I am now about 3 1/2 weeks out from recovery.  The recovery is slower than I expected, but I am off crutches and no longer need it wrapped.  Physical therapy starts this week.  Can't fail to mention how wonderful the women in our ward were who contributed meals, babysitting, and rides to and from the hospital.  They were my guardian angels that week!

Over the past year, we have slowly been making plans to sell our home with hopes to get into something with a bit more elbow room.  After my surgery, I decided to postpone a potential move until January.  That decision relieved quite a bit of stress for a few weeks, but we ultimately decided to move forward anyway.  Last week was an painful week, both physically (from my leg) and emotionally (from the move).  I never expected the huge amount of work involved in prepping a home to sell, nor did I expect the continual waves of emotional stress.  Fortunately, I have found much peace today and am feeling more hopeful about the whole ordeal.

James

So as not to leave anyone out, I had better add an update on James.  Without much ceremony, James completed 1st grade.  He also had a great year and especially enjoyed the extensive focus this year on  animals. He is now very concerned about keeping our environment clean and protecting endagered animals.  His final project was a research paper and poster on Manta Rays.  He later reported that the class thought it was a bat!  I guess they didin't look close enough!

James dropped our iPad a few weeks ago.  I have never heard such an agonizing, remorseful sob in my career as mother.  I couldn't get mad and had to hold back the impulse to laugh!

Love my little James!

Piano

The boys completed yet another year in piano with Nancy Pirozzi.  They were really excited to perform their pieces and did a great job!  They even made it through their duet!  Good job boys!

Kindergarten Graduation

Evidently, Kindergarten deserves a ceremony.  Note the Kleenex box on hand for any emotional parents.  Kindergarten with Mrs. Ingraham was a happy place for Ruth this year.  She grew in confidence, made lots of cute friends, and is well on her way to becoming a reader.  On the final day of school, she sobbed all the way home, much to the bewilderment of her two older brothers!

4th grade wrap up

With his lanky limbs and bottomless appetite, I think that David is finally ready to head into 5th grade.  4th grade was a great experience for David.  He loved learning about California history, working on computers, and fine tuning his multiplication skills.  We also discovered David's love for writing, demonstrated by his essays which would go on page after page after page.  The final week of school, David's class put on a play called "Gold Dust or Bust" in which he played Captain Pyrite.

A couple of days later, we gathered for yet another event: 4th grade strings concert.

Culture

Seems like it's been a very cultural month for us.  Last fall, Joseph and I bought season tickets to the symphony.  Our final concert this past month was definitely our favorite: "The Planets" by Gustav Holst and Midori, a featured violinist.  A week later, BYU's Vocal Point was in town, so we decided to treat the boys to a night out.  Just as expected, the concert was GREAT!  We've occasionally watched their YouTube channel, so we recognized many of the singers.  They also sang James' favorite song, "Happy", which made him very happy!

Our final excursion this month was my Mother's Day gift.  Newsies was on tour at the Segerstrom.  The dancing was out of this world, even when viewed from the rafters.
