Memorial Day Adventure

Last weekend we took a trip up to Cortez, CO to visit Joseph's sister.  Along the way we stopped at the Grand Canyon.

This was David's favorite part..

When we first arrived, a huge fog covered everything.  After a few hours, the fog opened up and revealed a breathtaking landscape.

After we arrived in Cortez, we took a trip to Mesa Verde to see some ancient Puebloan ruins, set deep inside the Canyon cliffs.  Here's David and his cousin...  we spent most of our time trying to keep David from climbing over the edge of the cliff.

On the way home, we visited Canyon de Chelly on the Navajo Reservation.  it turned out to be quite an experience.  As soon as we got there, it began to drizzle.  Since we only had a couple of hours to stop, we decided to throw on our Ponchos and hike in the rain.

Things were going pretty well.  Even James seemed to like the rain.

The cliffs seemed pretty dry.. no problem

The bottom of the canyon was lovely.  Here are some more ruins.

We took our time at the bottom of the canyon until suddenly, lightning, thunder, downpour, and flash flood.  Waterfalls began pouring from all sides of the canyon.

Our nice dry path instantly looked like this:

We gave up on staying dry and instead, focused of getting out of there.  David was a trooper.

We finally made it out, though soaked to the bone.  I would never suggest hiking a canyon in a flash flood, but it was an amazing experience.  I am in awe of God's creations; they are truly more spectacular than anything man can do.
